YOUR TREATMENT GUIDE
Root Canal Treatment
A persistent toothache, sensitivity or swelling may mean the soft tissue inside a tooth is inflamed or infected. Root canal care aims to remove infected tissue and preserve the tooth when possible.

When you may want a consultation
- Pain when biting or lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Swelling around a tooth or recurring gum pimple
- Deep decay, a crack or trauma affecting the tooth pulp
What to expect
- Dental examination and X-rays when needed
- Local anaesthetic, cleaning and shaping the root canals
- Sealing the canals and restoring the tooth with a filling or crown if needed
Aftercare and important considerations
Mild tenderness can follow treatment. Attend follow-up visits and avoid biting hard food on a temporary restoration. Severe swelling, fever or worsening pain needs prompt professional advice.
Common questions
Will root canal treatment save every tooth?
Not always. A severely fractured or unrestorable tooth may need another plan.
Will I need a crown?
Some teeth benefit from a crown, especially back teeth with substantial damage. Your dentist will advise.
